“National Pictorial” is a magazine issued by the State and government of China, it served as the crucial media platform for Chinese State Party with its 50 years of publication history. The series of works reproduces parts of “National Pictorial” cover.
I document the evolution of the image of ethnic minorities in China through this series. Images that represent each minority group are based on stereotypes originated and perceived by people in the 50s. To create the series, I invited my friends, relatives, and colleagues, to dress up and act as the characters showed in the propaganda, recreating the covers of the magazine. Directing the actors to present a deliberate and unnatural rigidity, the artist investigates the clichés in Chinese culture in order to examine a contemporary relevancy.
