Hugs on Tape (Tanya/Papa)

Hugs on Tape satisfies a visceral need for physical contact in the pandemic era. We wanted to distribute Hug Simulations that can share bursts of joy and intimacy. We sent a call out to friends and family requesting recordings of hugs with someone in their pod. The recordings captured tenderness and love among those spending more time than ever together, and a choreography of closeness inside the familiar frame of video, animation, and Zoom calls. The series is created with tools ranging from handmade audio/video synthesizers to smartphones and digital animation software. All the patterns and colors in Hugs on Tape are made exclusively with hardware, analog synthesizers and other analog instruments. Although some were found or borrowed, LoVid’s handmade synthesizers are the primary instruments used in LoVid recordings for over a decade.

Object5 (Young Antiquities)

Young Antiquities, a series of media objects, embraces relationships between time and physical

presence, a post-material world and the reality of decomposition. We 3D scanned a group of

textile sculptures called Video Taxidermy using an array of 3D capture devices, from high-end

tools for paleontological research to handheld App-based camera-scans. These digital

re-compositions are presented as animated virtual sculptures in GIF form and some have their

own 3D .obj file for future 3D printing. The objects themselves are created from patterns of

analog video recordings, twisted and sewn together into abstract small shapes that resemble

organs, glitches, relics of retrofuturistic garments.

Somesunsets

This digital photo was made by using physical colored filters on a custom built temporospatial camera.

The camera was engineered for LoVid by Douglas Repetto with custom software and Raspberry Pi. The

camera has no viewfinder, it creates real time collages based on photos taken in sequence. It is designed

to enhance the connection between the cameraperson, the instrument, and the natural environment.
