Actaeon-I

My own version of a classical ancient Greek subject. Basically I see in this ancient myth a very concise metaphor of the rebellion of what we think to be a tamed nature against its own tamers.

Judith

One of the first paintings I made once I moved to Rome. Simply my version of a very popular subject in the art of the 17th century while the #MeToo movement started to gain a lot of momentum in 2018.

Clash of civilizations – The Cave

A group pf Native American Shamans were painting religious imageries into a cave, until 2 killers plus one preacher were shooting all of them to death.

The killers have the faces of Clement Greenberg , Jackson Pollock and Alfred H.Barr, while, among the Shamans we can recognize the portraits of Rapahel, Michelangelo and the painter himself.

This painting was shown in Milan at Palazzo delle Stelline in 2017.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven images

This painting is a commentary about religious iconoclasm. We see an American puritan family entering in a painter studio which is seen, according to their point of view, as a sinner, or as somebody possessed by evil.

The puritans are bringing the bible opened on the 2nd commandment which prohibits painting or sculpting images of practically anything. The composition is based on a 15th century painting by Michael Pacher depicting the Devil bringing the book of lies to St. Augustine. In my composition the place of St.Augustine is taken by the devil and the place of the devil by the puritans family. This painting has been published in an Art History book titled “The art of the Devil” about the depiction of the devil in art history, published in several countries, in America by Cernunnos.

Hostia

This painting is part of a very large body of works including painting sculptures architecture and music all dedicated to the figure of Pier Paolo Pasolini, the famous italin poet film director and political polemicist.

It depicts the falling underground of the body of Pasolini just after being killed in Ostia in 1975.

Up, through the hole in the ceiling, are a couple of journalists, a police man and the alleged killer of Pasolini, Pino Pelosi.

While falling, the body of Pasolini goes through a group of ignudes beating each other in a sort of orgy of violence reminiscent of Pasolini’s last movie, Salo’. At the bottom of the painting there’s a sort of island surrounded by water where is visible Pier Paolo Pasolini himself at the age of 7 while seated in the lap of his mother learning how to write poetry.

The other 2 figures are the portraits of Petrarch ( the ideal mentor of the young pasolini) and Ezra Pound, the american poet, which was interviewed by Pasolini in his house in Venice in 1969.

This painting has been shown in Lissone Museo di Arte Contemporanea in 2014, in Stockholm Fine art National Museum in 2020, and in Atheneum museum in Helsinki also in 2020.

It has been published several times in books about Pasolini, Pound and, because i also made a mural version of it in an area of Rome, in several books and documentaries about Rome.

Madonna vs Madonna

Spanish curator Paco Barragan once asked me to make a painting about how much Madonna the popstar is almost getting more popular than the christian Madonna, the VirginMary, for a show he was curating.I decided to adopt the composition of a 17th century painting which was also part of the show depictingJudith and Holophernes. In my composition Madonna the singer just beheaded Madonna the religious figure. On the floor there are the symbols of the 3 monotheistic religions plus the one of zoroastrianism from which all of them derive.

Robert Johnson and the devil

One of the most influential blues musicians, Robert Johnson, meets the devil at a crossroad in Mississippi. While he’s learning how to play the guitar he’s having a vision about the future of music, in the form of the burning guitar of Jimi Hendrix brought to him by a group of demons, and the huge influence his music will have on it. This painting is part of a larger project including the planning of a huge monument to be erected in the exact place where Robert Johnson met the devil.

Mothers II

This is one of the first paintings I made once I arrived in New York . A tornado is destroying the American midwest, high and low, nature and artificial are getting all remixed. The model of the 3 figures in the painting is Julie Atlas Muz a burlesque queen and artist, which at that time, was showing with Deitch projects. This painting is part of a series called ‘Mothers”. With this series I was experimenting with the possibility of intervening into the formation of a local mythology like the one Julie Atlas Muz was creating in New York in the early 2000s.

Enduring freedom

The painting shows a group of American soldiers in Afghanistan while something is happening outside of the space depicted in the image, the soldiers are reacting to it. In the painting is depicted no other elements beside the soldiers and the tank, the landscape is completely empty and devoid of information in order to reflect the complete disconnection between the American army and the context into which they operate. This painting has been shown at Flash Art 1st Biennale in Prague in 2003, Arnhem Museum in 2011, Domus Artium Salamanca in 2012, and it’s also published in Suzanne Hudson’s “Painting Now”-Thames and Hudson London-New York 2016
